Has anyone else noticed...

I have a very specific problem with my players. Actually I have several (like the guy who keeps trying to take the hinges off all the doors), but right now I want to focus on a specific one.

Whenever I have an enemy run who is supposed to get away, the players will never stop the chase until they catch it or their characters drop dead of exhaustion, whichever comes first. Conversely, when they are supposed to keep chasing an uncatchable foe until it leads them someplace, they give up almost immediately.

I never let on which type of pursuit this is, but somehow they always manage to do the exact opposite of whatever would move the plot along. Does anyone else have this problem?
