An Introvert's Conversation With Himself

Game of the Month?

This is an idea I've been kicking around for a while.

Basically, we'll call it Game of the Month. What we all do on this community (anyone who's interested) is pick a game. Then during the course of the next month we commit to trying a session or two of that game. Could be a one shot, could be a short campaign, whatever. The point is we all try out the same game, and then post about it. At the end of the month I'll start a dedicated thread where we can share our thoughts and impressions (though it's perfectly fine and good to post during the month about the game). Why? Expose ourselves to new things, broaden our horizons. Hopefully a few people find something they really love.

I'm going to lay down some criteria for game choice. This isn't set in stone, just kind of my thoughts on the subject:
-- no D&D/D20 stuff. We've all played D&D and its many variants before, I don't think there's much "exposure to new stuff" value in playing another D20 game. I know many fine games have D20 versions, so why not try the original instead (Fading Suns, Deadlands, Call of Cthulhu, etc)
-- No World of Darkness stuff. Again, the idea is to expose people to new things.
-- Nothing that requires multiple books or a large investment to play. I think the whole "buy a pair of 35 dollar books to play the game" is a load of horseshit designed to bilk money from gamers. Plus, the income range on the community is probably quite broad and I don't want to lock people out of participating because they can't afford it.

I'll go ahead and propose an intitial game. The Shadows of Yesterday is a fantasy RPG designed to evoke the imagery of the kind of sort-of crappy fantasy novels we all read when we were teenagers - you know, the ones with lots of melodrama and romance and Dark Lords menacing all of creation... It's also available as a free download (about 30 pages printed) with another 30 or so page supplement. Or you can go ahead and buy a copy if you like it.

So, thoughts? Anyone want to go ahead and do this?
