Namely the character creation system. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I wanna start out as some invincible walking death machine who also knows everything about everything, has and can use everything. But...that being said...
My character concept is a homicide detective. We all decided to put ourselves somehow related to the Police Department, and this one appealed to me the most after years of watching Law and Order. So after we batted some things around for a bit and figured out some minor details to make sure it would work, we got around to making the character. We drew out a rough outline of him and then set to the creation part. Now we wanted to make sure he had the requisite dots required for his line of work first, so we took a glance at the average cop they show and some of the stuff for law/investigation/etc etc. Status too.
And we realized there aren't enough dots in creation even if you ignore ANYTHING else to really represent a detective. I was crestfallen. The ST decided to give me the 35 exp option and we talked about it for a long time because I didn't want him to change his plans just for me. Even after spending the 35 exp and barely having a bit leftover to not make him a cardboard cutout of a character, I'm still quite worried I haven't really done him justice.

Is him, after spending the vast majority of points on skills to try and cover some of the gap, and a few on merits (the merits that would have been backgrounds before). Then we went about doing the whole thing with like you ask questions and answer for the character thing. Normally this is where we spend freebies. Without that extra bit...it was quite difficult for me to set him apart. I guess it doesn't help that my concept was the all american Catholic kid gone cop, straight laced, 2.3 kids, a dog, a wife who's a schoolteacher...
But still and all, this has left me with a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. The requirements to accurately portray a certain...expertise I guess, seem to have stayed the same in a few cases, but gone up in the vast majority. Meanwhile, what you get has decreased. I'm not saying I disagree with the second part, but to go along with the first it seems...well...bad. Like the new WoD is supposed to be about playing regular people with regular jobs and regular lives...but it seems you can't really do that. Maybe my concept was over-reaching a bit, but given my tv diet homicide detectives, DAs, doctors, and that such all seem regular people...whereas in this system you'd almost need to make them the hardcore mega elite NPCs.
Anybody else had any problem with this so far? Any solutions you came up with? The other players didn't appear to have as much of a problem...though a few of them tried to get away with the erase and fix method once they found out they got the 35 XP. The other players also came up with a concept after they put dots on paper.
But does anybody have any solutions we could maybe implement next time around, or is this just one of those odd cases of...misfortune?
