I am at a crossroads for my new game idea. The system will be TSR's old Alternity rules. The background will be Joss Whedon's Firefly. The basis will be more character than sci-fi driven. Any tech will be story driven, and things like weapons (like serious mojoy weapons, with high damage, anything that throws off character balance, that is) and useful futuristic gizmos will be infrequent. Firefly was a western style story first and a space opera second. Actually, calling it space opera is closer than anything. Calling it a Space Western is right on target. The two paths I can take at this point are as such. There is precious little information available about Firefly the tv show. Exacting info helps alot when you are trying to establish a game based on a background. Now, I can either try to build my game based on what I know and second guess the series creators, or I can build my game my way and completely leave the page. I am somewhat a continuity freak, so I want to make sure I get it "right". I realized I could probably never get it "right" so should therefor leave the page at will. I lean more towards building my own galaxy based on Joss' foundation. The more I look at it, the more I like the Alternity engine. I tend to favour Gurps for alot of what I run. But that system loses some of it's excitment, for me, at low character point levels. Altertinity seems to follow along a nice advancement line- steady at the beginning without gettting seriously munchkiny toward the middle or end.
