10:52a - Ideas for semi-cursed items
So, in our D&D 3.5 game, my PC is an unwilling cleric of the Great Old Ones. She was studying to be a wizard, but one day she pulled the wrong book off the shelf and established a connection with things that aren't good for her sanity. Now Hyadis travels the countryside looking for interesting bits of archaeology and old books, and sometimes righting wrongs when she can shut out the voices in her head.

I try to keep the mechanics pretty close to vanilla 3.5 while giving it a Mythos flavour. For instance:

- She casts spells by drawing on that connection (for instance, Summon Monster 1 calls up some venomous extra-dimensional horror that just happens to have the same stats as a fiendish viper or whatever). The more she casts, the more erratic she becomes; she starts to hallucinate, and eventually she falls into a grand mal seizure and wakes up an hour or two later with large gaps in her memory and somebody's severed fingers in her pockets.* But this resets her ability to cast spells, replacing the standard 'daily prayer' thing.

- Sometimes she shuts herself in a room for a few days and starts writing Secrets Man Was Not Meant To Know on every flat surface she can find. Some of the portable ones turn out to be useful: spells etc. (Read: Scribe Scroll.)

Now she's approaching sixth level, and I'm thinking of taking Craft Magic Item, and trying to figure out how to tweak the standard item creation rules to get things that are still useful but have a Mythos flavour to them. Any ideas?

*It turns out the party's rogue put them there to mess with her head. Thank you ever so much, Kauri.

THE DARKEST YEARS

It had started nearly a decade ago. At first no one thought much of the random disappearances and deaths, all seemingly unconnected to one another. Young, old, female, male, single people, group murders. There was nothing connecting them one another. Until Professor Dumbledore realised what was happening.

From there it didn't take people long to realise that there was something more to these deaths than what originally appeared. Someone then another started to notice that they were Muggles, Muggleborns, people who supported equality. As each day more and more deaths and disappearances were occurring until they could no longer be ignored.

The year is now 1980, the attacks have been occurring for a decade and show no sign of stopping. Everyone is scared, no one trusts anyone, especially those involed the most in the war. Welcome to The Darkest Years, the first war is raging between the Death Eaters and the Order of the Phoenix while others are just trying to live their lives, stay safe and pretend that nothing is happening.

The Darkest Years is a canon compliant, Marauder Era game set in 1980 that focuses not only on the war but the lives of the other people, those not directly involved with it.

OPENED SEPTEMBER 1ST

Wanted: Albus Dumbledore, Arthur and Molly Weasley, Rodolphus and Rabastan Lestrange, Sirius Black, Amycus and Alecto, Death Eaters, Neutrals, Fudge, Alice and Frank and Millicent Bagnold among others.
