On Campaign Settings

I've been thinking about this post (and a second post) for a week or so, but the earlier question which involved character death in Ravenloft inspired me to go ahead and actually post this one.

What are the differences between the traditional fantasy settings in D&D (namely 3.5, and namely, Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, and Dragonlance. And the Pathfinder setting, since that's the system I'll technically be playing). And not just names, places, and histories, but are there any significant stylistic, thematic, etc. differences in them? And, playing 3.5/Pathfinder, what are the availability of those settings? I've been getting a lot of contradicting information about what was and wasn't converted/ported to 3.5, and to what degrees/availabilities.

(Secretly, I think it's Spelljammer I want to play, but I don't want to have to deal with conversions for my first time DMing.)
