Removing Angst

So, the question that comes to mind is, how do you remove angst from a campaign?  The thing is, if Bad Things happen, characters should feel bad about it, and react accordingly, but how do you ensure this doesn't become a defining part of the game?  My sister suggested removing the source of the angst, but then you need to find a method of doing so without causing more angst.
