(no subject)

In the comment thread of the recently-deleted advertisement, cpip suggested we might have an interesting discussion about the differences in traditions/cultures that have sprung up between what most (IME) of us here classify to as RPG's (derivatives of pencil-and-paper/tabletop, including LARP) versus celebrity/fandom-based RP (note the deliberate absence of the "G").

I've noticed that the fandom RP players tend to be completely unaware of the presence of the RPG side, but not vice-versa. Example (from the deleted advertisement, paraphrased from memory): We are looking for all kinds of RP, from [name of band] to [name of anime] to [name of TV series]. I'm guessing that if one put in a character application for "Elminster from the Forgotten Realms," they wouldn't have a clue who that was. Or maybe assume it was something related to World of Warcraft. Just my opinion.

Of course, we're painfully aware of the fandom RPers, at least because they spam the community with advertisements on a fairly regular basis.

Anyway, feel free to discuss.

On the subject of games... I'm wanting to experience a PBEM D&D-type game, to get a feel for it, perhaps join or run one at some point... is anyone here a GM for one? Ideally, I'd like to get the emails from everyone, and simply 'watch' so I know what's going on, maybe with a question or two for the GM on occasion.
