Paranoia as Urban SF

Urban Science Fiction is a largely unrecognized category of SF. I say "category" rather than "genre," because genre is a marketing tool and Urban SF does not have its own shelf at Barnes and Noble. It's not just SF set in a city, though. Urban SF asks questions like "How will future technologies affect the way people live in cities?" or "What kind of imaginary tech could be used to address a modern problem of urban life?" While on that level Urban SF is speculation on the future, I am more interested in another level: Using the trappings of SF to examine how people live in cities now, to explore issues that face city-dwellers today.
