10:47a - On measuring balance
There's a good number of hardcore RPG theorists/designers on the board--this question is for you.

Has anyone attempted to develop a quantitative system for measuring game balance (or lack thereof) in RPGs? I'm not saying this can be done, but I'm curious if anyone has tried. And for those who think that game balance is an unattainable goal, what sort of analysis could be used to back up your claim?

EDIT: I'm not neccessarily asking to measure the balance of an entire system at once. Suppose you want to introduce a new piece of equipment or character ability into a game--is there any sort of quantitative system by which you could measure its balance/effectiveness/power against the equipment or abilities already available?
