Hat Trick

For my next campaign, before character creation even begins, I am going to fill a hat with slips of paper. On each slip is going to be a background idea that could be used as a plot hook. Each player will draw 1-2 times from this hat, and incorporate whatever they draw into their character background. It's a method similar to the old "lifepath" or Central Casting books, but far less all-encompassing.

Examples include "one of your parents is missing," "you are engaged as part of an arranged marriage," "you have a contact in the Imperial palace," etc.

Anyone have any ideas on what kind of plot hooks I could put in the hat?
