Need advice on DMing.

Hi all!

I'm considering running a DnD game using a custom made world. It'll be my first time DMing.

I'm also considering running the game half-online and half-IRL. My goal is to let characters be themselves and go solo via interaction with me over e-mail or chat programs, and I'd save getting together in a session for 2 or more players interacting with each other when a major event or battle occurs.

What I'd like to know is, what are the pros and cons to this approach? One advantage I see is that players get the "spotlight" more often when my focus is on them over e-mail. Another advantage is that the player and I don't have to think on the spot so often, we can both consider our actions more carefully and think things through. I'm not planning on doing a whole lot of dice rolling via e-mail, I'll save that for actual sessions.

What are your experiences with online PnP RPG's?
