11:17a - Derivative Character Archetypes
About a month ago, I was having a discussion about the validity of role-playing characters that were exact derivitives of characters from anime series' with someone on a message board. My position was that it was almost impossible not to play a derivative of some character (archetype), and that playing these characters were still valid, the same way fan-fic was a valid creative artform (just one that I don't chose to indulge in). His position was that it was a betrayal of the spirit of role-playing.

It seems that Marvel agree with the person I was arguing with.

So, what do people think about this? What will this mean for the RPing industry, and other creative and non-creative industries that subsist using derivative characters to sustain themselves?

current mood: worried
