Amnesia, cool plot device or lame crutch.

mediaprophet spake thusly: Formula for Amnesiac characters: Write them deeply into the plot. Make them wish they knew what their past was. Make people either love or hate them. Give them friends, enemies, and lovers.

As GM I've used it twice, and both times it was imposed on the players without their prior knowledge. That was the key. Show up to play, get handed nothing, and the game has started without so much as a "who wants dip for the chips?" (1)

It has to be used sparingly, but it can be a potent tool for gaming.
