prestige classes

a D&D3e question. In the DM handbook, it seems to imply that any prestige class has an order or guild or troupe or what-have-you. It mentions the assasin guild, shadowdancer troupes ect. But is it possible to have just individuals scattered throught the campaign who have the class and have no affiliation to eachother. Maybe there could be a book with instructions to become a certain class. Or maybe it could only be taught through apprentiship. Of coarse, even if the game doesn't allow such things, I will probobly break the rule anyway, but what are your opinions?
