Psion Powers, Feats and Skills

I just leveled up to the third level and my DM is requesting changes to the elemental steward spell.  He said he wants to keep psions no more powerful than wizards, and elemental steward is more powerful than any 2nd level wizard spell.  So he said we could either make it a third level spell or prevent them from using psionic powers

I used the following argument

I chose Psions partly because they were more powerful than wizards and sorcerers.
The stewards are pretty weak without psionic damage.  Correct me if
I'm wrong, but a hand to hand attack with 10-13 strength is pretty weak, and basically
not worth summoning (I'd lose out on damage I could inflict in other means).

At first, my suggestion was how about the psionic do 1D6 damage instead of 2D6 damage (and have have easier will save negates on demoralize, etc), or 1D5 if it's 2D5?  Then at the 3rd level, it becomes 2D6?   I still can't summon two until the 5th level.

Then, I thought about it some more: I give up 3 power points that could have done 3D10 damage with a mindthrust, plus a turn.  Compare these two scenarios

1. Cast Mindthrust, augmented once for 2D10 - average 10 damage
2. Cast Mindthrust, augmented once for 2D10 - average 10 damage
3. Cast Mindthrust, augmented once for 2D10 - average 10 damage
4. Cast Mindthrust, augmented once for 2D10 - average 10 damage

I've done 40 damage, minus save risks, and I've spent 8 power points.  Now

1. Cast Elemental Steward
2. Cast Mindthrust, augmented once for 2D10 - average 10 damage; elemental attacks for 2D6, which is 6 damage
3. Cast Mindthrust, augmented once for 2D10 - average 10 damage; elemental attacks for 2D6, which is 6 damage
4. Cast Mindthrust, augmented once for 2D10 - average 10 damage; elemental attacks for 2D6, which is 6 damage

I've done 48 damage on average, minus save risks, and I've spent 9 power points.  This becomes 60 versus 63 if I augment mindthrust by 3 instead of 2.  (If the elemental does 1D6 damage, it's then 40 vs. 39 or 60 vs. 54.)

So I've spent one more power point and achieved, on average, 8 more points of damage,  I don't think that's unreasonable but I will yield on this if you think my arguments are false.  So I think the psionic powers are fair, but if you disagree, I think the sensible thing might be to remove the peripheral spells (demoralize, change wind) or keep the peripheral spells but have the energy spells do half-damage.

I guess there's also the factor that monsters might attack them instead of a permanent party member, but
the DM will go after party members, I think, unless they're mindless creatures that automatically attack
the nearest creature.  And they do get the added flexibility of things like demoralize; but I don't think
this is superpowerful, given that I've spent an additional point only to do 3-8 extra points of damage otherwise.

Mindthrust also doesn't work on everyone, so you could do the calculations above with energy ray - energy ray does 1D6+1, so the equivalent damage in four rounds is 28 damage using energy ray four times versus 39 damage three times with one elemental, or about 30 versus 39 if I compare energy ray fully augmented.   So this does become more useful when dealing with the undead, etc.
Any other arguments/observations would be appreciated.  I hate to take a power away if in fact it's a fair power.

Also, any recommendations for a bonus feat?  Expanded knowledge is nice - it would allow to have astral construct (is that necessary if I have elemental stewards?  Clearly at higher levels Ast C is better).  More power points is also a very nice feat, though.

About new powers to choose - swarm of Crystals has low damage, but it's automatic, and an area effect.  Some people say ego whip is powerful, but I don't see why, unless reducing charisma to zero kills something.

As for skills, any recommendations as to which is most likely to come up?  Nobody in my party seems to have any of these, except for climb.

*Climb
* Decipher Script
*Architecture and engineering (buildings, aqueducts, bridges, fortifications)

• Dungeoneering (aberrations, caverns, oozes, spelunking)

• Geography (lands, terrain, climate, people)

Finally, are there any psionic devices/tattoos that are especially recommended within the $500-1000 range?

BTW, a psicrystal has an intelligence of 6.  Does this mean it gains no new skill points until intelligence reaches 8, since a psion gets skills according to 2+(Int Modifier) X 4?
